How We Work Together
Every property is different. Every guest relationship is different. What boutique hotel guest retention requires is not a template — it is a conversation. This is how that conversation becomes a system.
Philosophy first. Process second.
Sun Cookery works with a small, deliberately selected number of properties each year. Not because of capacity constraints — because the work requires genuine alignment. A ritual system that does not emerge from a property’s actual emotional identity will feel like exactly what it is: something added on.
Michelle Mize approaches every potential engagement as a thought partner first. The first conversation is never a discovery call in the traditional sense. It is a genuine exchange — about how the property thinks about its guests, what the leadership team believes about loyalty, and whether there is a shared conviction that what happens after a guest leaves matters as much as what happens during the stay.
If that alignment exists, the work begins. If it doesn’t, we’ll both know quickly — and that’s equally valuable.
Five touchpoints. One coherent system.
Every Sun Cookery engagement follows a deliberate sequence — five touchpoints that move from mutual discovery through custom design to a ritual system fully integrated with your property’s emotional identity.

The Intro Conversation
A genuine exchange — not a pitch, not a discovery call in the traditional sense. Michelle listens for how your leadership team thinks about guests, what you believe about loyalty, and whether the Ritual Return Method™ is the right fit for your property. This conversation has no agenda other than honesty.
Property Discovery
A deeper look at what makes your property emotionally distinct — the specific feelings, memories, and brand mythology your guests carry when they leave. This is where Sun Cookery learns the raw material of your guest relationship: what guests say, what they remember, what brings them back, and what quietly fades.
Ritual System Design
The Ritual Return Method™, custom-built for your property. Every element — the sensory anchors, the timing, the language, the objects — is designed to feel like it could only have come from you. Nothing is templated. Nothing is borrowed from another property. This phase is where the methodology becomes specific.
Sourcing & Production
The physical elements of the ritual system are identified, sourced, and produced — guided by the emotional design established in Phase 3. This includes artisan sourcing where relevant, packaging design, and quality review. Timeline at this stage depends on the complexity of the elements and the sourcing requirements involved.
Implementation & Handoff
The ritual system is delivered, and your team is equipped to execute it with the same quality of intention that designed it. Sun Cookery remains available for refinement as the system matures and as you gather guest response over time.
From first conversation to first ritual arriving at a guest’s home — typically within a single season. The timeline reflects the complexity of the sourcing and the accessibility of the stakeholders involved, not the urgency of the work.
What changes — and how you’ll know.
A Sun Cookery engagement does not produce a marketing campaign. It produces a shift in the emotional architecture of the guest relationship — one that is felt before it is measured.
Properties that implement the Ritual Return Method™ describe a change in the quality of guest communication after departure. Guests reach out. They share what arrived. They reference the experience when they rebook — not the room or the rate, but the feeling of having been remembered.
Over time, the system compounds. Guests who feel genuinely known do not need to be incentivized to return. They return because belonging is a powerful and underestimated human motivation — and your property has become the place that provides it.
The measure of a successful engagement is not a single return visit. It is the quality of the relationship over years — and the quiet but compounding commercial value that relationship produces.

The most durable form of hotel loyalty is not earned through perks. It is felt. And what is felt is far more durable than what is rewarded.
Sun Cookery is not the right partner for every property.
The Ritual Return Method™ works best when leadership is already asking the right questions — not “how do we increase occupancy” but “how do we deepen the relationship with the guests we already have.”
It is the right fit for independent luxury properties and boutique collections where the guest experience is the primary competitive asset — and where leadership has the authority, the conviction, and the appetite to invest in something that operates at the level of emotional memory rather than transactional loyalty.
It is not the right fit for properties where post-stay guest engagement is seen primarily as a marketing function, or where the decision-making process requires the kind of institutional approval that makes genuine customization impossible.
If you are reading this page and quietly recognizing your property in it — that recognition is worth paying attention to.
The first step is a conversation.
There is no proposal before the conversation. No deck. No scope of work. Just an honest exchange about your property, your guests, and whether the Ritual Return Method™ is the right answer to the question you’re already asking.
Michelle reads every inquiry personally and responds to every one.
